VEHICLE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS EXPLAINED

What does a vehicle diagnostic scan show?

Vehicle computers use sensor information to monitor and control many systems. When a fault is detected, a warning light or stored diagnostic trouble code can help a technician decide where to investigate. A scan can provide useful information about the conditions the computer recorded.

A trouble code is a starting point

A code does not automatically prove that a particular part needs replacement. Different mechanical, electrical or operating conditions can produce similar symptoms. A technician may need to inspect components, review service information and perform additional tests before recommending a repair.

How to prepare for your diagnostic visit

Note when the concern occurs, which warning lights appear and whether the vehicle recently received repairs. Bring previous service records and diagnostic results if available. Ask the shop to explain the diagnostic scope, findings and proposed repair estimate.
