Transmission fluid provides correct frictional properties in the transmission, protecting the clutch, gears, and bearings from wear. Over time, the extreme heat in the transmission breaks down the fluid, allowing sludge and dirt to accumulate and circulate throughout the transmission. Contaminates cause mechanical wear and tear and may eventually lead to an expensive repair.

To prolong the life of your transmission, Harrell’s Tire & Auto Service recommends a transmission fluid flush every two years or 30,000 miles. The old transmission fluid is removed, and a cleaning solution is mechanically run through to remove grime and sludge. Once the transmission is clean, it is filled with new fluid. The process differs between automatic and manual transmissions, but the concept is the same. Both result in better fuel economy and more efficient transmission.
